Rennes to Montpellier Flight: The Mediterranean Sun Just 1 Hour and 20 Minutes from Brittany

Imagine this: it’s gray and overcast along the banks of the Vilaine River as you board your train in Saint-Jacques. Just 1 hour and 20 minutes later, you’re sipping coffee on a sidewalk café terrace under the Montpellier sun. That’s the whole appeal of a Rennes-Montpellier flight: a change of climate and accent in a trip that’s shorter than driving from Rennes to Nantes. Montpellier captures the essence of the South without going overboard. An old town where you can happily lose yourself, the sea just twenty minutes away, and the energy of a city that’s forever young. The perfect destination for a weekend that’ll blow you away. That leaves the real question: what to do in Montpellier once you’ve landed? Here are five suggestions.

A 1-hour-20-minute flight, and Brittany seems far away

The direct flight from Rennes to Montpellier takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes. By comparison, the same trip by train takes around six hours, including a transfer in Paris. So flying saves you a full day, which quickly turns into an afternoon at the beach or drinks on the Comédie. That’s the killer argument for a long weekend: you leave on Saturday morning, enjoy two full days, and come home without feeling like you’ve spent your whole life on the road.

The Sun, the better one

Let’s be honest—that’s often what we come here for. Montpellier is one of the sunniest cities in France, with a Mediterranean climate that makes outdoor seating a way of life. Starting in spring, life in the city moves outdoors: we have lunch in the sun, hang out in the squares in the evening, and leave the waxed shoes at the back of the closet. And even in the middle of winter, the southern light has a comforting quality when you’ve just come from a November in Rennes.

L'Écusson, a delightful maze to explore

Montpellier’s historic center has a charming name: L'Écusson, because of its coat-of-arms shape. Here, you can wander through cobblestone alleys, past Renaissance mansions and small squares lined with terraces, all the way to the famous Place de la Comédie and its opera house. Art lovers should make a detour to the Musée Fabre, one of the most important museums in France outside of Paris. A good tip while you’re there: look up, as the facades often conceal spectacular courtyards and staircases.

A youthful city, a bountiful culinary scene

Home to one of Europe’s oldest medical schools still in operation, Montpellier is also one of France’s youngest cities. You can feel it on the streets: lively bars, concerts, and colorful markets. When it comes to food, you can enjoy the best of the South without breaking the bank. Oysters from the Thau Lagoon, sun-kissed vegetables, and Languedoc wines that are gaining prestige year after year. Stop by the covered market to sample it all at once.

The Mediterranean, Just Twenty Minutes Away

Here’s what Rennes can’t offer: the open sea within easy reach by tram and bus. The beaches of Palavas-les-Flots, Carnon, and La Grande-Motte—with its 1970s architecture—are just a few kilometers away. Looking for something a little wilder? The Camargue and its flamingos aren’t far away. It’s the perfect way to alternate between a museum visit in the morning and a swim in the afternoon—all in the same day. Don’t forget your swimsuit, even for a spring weekend. (If you’re tempted by the Mediterranean elsewhere, check out our Rennes to Marseille flight as well.)
