Dutch cuisine is varied and full of surprises. At Amsterdam’s markets and small shops, try caramel stroopwafels, pickled herring or Dutch cheeses (Gouda, Edam). Those who enjoy a sweet-and-savoury combination will love poffertjes (mini pancakes) and appeltaart (spiced apple tart). For meals, restaurants in the Jordaan or De Pijp neighbourhoods offer international dishes. The ‘brown cafés’ serve specialities such as bitterballen (meat croquettes) and fine local beers.

Discover the rest of the world via Amsterdam

Thanks to its international airport, Amsterdam is a true gateway to the world. With optimised connections from Rennes, it’s easy to reach hundreds of destinations in record time! Whether you’re setting off to explore Europe, Asia, the Americas or Africa, this major hub guarantees you a smooth and hassle-free journey. A stopover in Amsterdam is also an opportunity to explore the city before flying off to new horizons.

An international crossroads and a starting point for exploring Northern Europe

Thanks to Schiphol Airport – one of Europe’s largest hubs – Amsterdam is the ‘gateway’ not only to the Netherlands, but to Northern Europe. A simple direct flight from Rennes to Amsterdam (KLM) will take you there, and from there you can explore further afield: Haarlem, Delft and The Hague are all less than 30 minutes away by train, making them ideal for lovely day trips.

In spring, don’t miss the tulip fields at Keukenhof in the nearby countryside. To the west, the windmills and traditional villages of Zaanse Schans in the north evoke the Holland of days gone by. To the north-east, the picturesque village of Durgerdam awaits you, whilst to the south, the vineyards of South Limburg (on the Belgian border) are just a short trip away.

Finally, Schiphol also allows you to extend your journey elsewhere (stop off in London, Berlin, or even North Africa) with a quick international flight. Amsterdam is therefore the starting point for a variety of destinations, whilst offering a complete change of scenery in its own right thanks to its rich heritage and canals.

Have you ever booked a parking space at Lyon airports? You’ll see, it’s very simple! Just follow the guide and watch the barrier lift as you drive through.

In offseason, there may occasionally be a stopover (via Paris-CDG or Amsterdam itself for the return journey), but the journey time remains around 3 to 4 hours in total, including the stopover.

In terms of time, there is no time difference with Rennes: France and the Netherlands are in the same time zone (UTC+1 in winter, +2 in summer). Amsterdam has a temperate oceanic climate. Summers (June–August) are generally mild (20–24 °C during the day) and sunny. Winters are cool (3–7 °C), damp and often windy.

Spring and autumn are cool but pleasant for a stroll if the weather is mild. The best time to visit is from April to September, when the parks and canals are at their best and the tulips (in spring) or the pleasant temperatures (in summer) provide the perfect setting. Amsterdam experiences rainfall throughout the year, so be sure to pack a raincoat or an umbrella.

The official currency is the euro (€). You will therefore not need to exchange any currency. Bank cards are widely accepted everywhere (restaurants, museums, shops). The local language is Dutch, but English is widely spoken: nearly 90 % of residents speak it fluently.

You’ll therefore have no trouble getting by with English in hotels and at tourist attractions. A few basic Dutch words (‘hallo’ for hello, ‘dank u’ for thank you) are always appreciated, but not essential.

As the Netherlands is part of the European Union and the Schengen Area, the formalities are straightforward for French and EU nationals. You simply need to present a valid identity card or passport at the time of departure. No visa is required for a short tourist stay when travelling from France.

However, do remember to check that your identity card has a recent photograph and remains valid beyond your return date. If you plan to hire a car, take your driver's licence with you.
