Rennes and the surrounding area

Rennes market

The lices market

A real institution, the Lices market alone makes it worth stopping off in Rennes. In the paved streets lined with overhanging half-timbered houses, fruit and vegetables jostle with flower stands, and fishermongers’ wares are set out alongside the organic produce: a true blend of all the many “Made in Breizh” flavours! Don't leave without tasting the famous "galette-saucisse", a local “take away” favourite.

Rennes city

Throught the cobbled streets

"Old Rennes” unveils its medieval heritage. Brittany’s Parliament building, restored after the great fire of 1994, is a symbolic landmark with its beautifully-decorated rooms. For an original visit, explore the city’s little known nooks and crannies in the company of a guide. As you wend your way through the streets, you might be tempted by a spot of shopping or a drink on a terrace, unless you prefer the peaceful setting of Thabor Park.

Rennes city

A cultural melting-pot

In Rennes, art is everywhere. In dedicated museums and galleries or on a street corner, the city’s artistic vibrancy is there for all to see. Classical or contemporary art enthusiasts should head down to the Museum of Fine Arts to admire the paintings, sculptures and artefacts. The FRAC, or Brittany Regional Contemporary Art Collection, houses its collections in a modern, “next generation” building.

Canal Rennes

As a family

For a visit with the kids, head for the Champs Libres, a cultural centre combining discovery with fun and games. This futuristic building in the city centre houses the Museum of Brittany, the Science Discovery Area and the Planetarium, as well as a six-storey library. For a breath of fresh air in the heart of the city, Gayeulles Park offers no less than 250 acres of greenery, ideal for fun activities.

Rennes by night

Rennes by night

When night falls, let the party begin. Rue Saint-Michel, the famous “street of thirst”, will welcome you in for a drink. Rue Saint-Georges with its many restaurants offers cosmopolitan cuisine for every taste. And the performances at the Rennes Opera House and the Théâtre National de Bretagne, are as good as anything you can see in Paris
